PhD researcher
Ana Gagua is a PhD researcher at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), in the Faculty of Technology, Policy, and Management (TPM). She studies the governance and organisational practice of AI in the public sector, with a focus on how Responsible AI moves from principle to everyday work.
Game designer
Gracia Bovenberg-Murris is a project leader and game designer at the TBM Gamelab, in the Faculty of Technology, Policy, and Management (TPM), where she designs game concepts and their visual design together with researchers and other game designers (for board, digital, and hybrid games). Gracia also facilitates serious gaming sessions and workshops.
Haiko van der Voort is an associate professor of organisation & governance at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). His research examines the governance of enforcement in the digital age, and how machine learning, AI, and data science are reshaping inspection work, regulatory arrangements, and the way norms develop. He is also Director of the MSc programme in Engineering and Policy Analysis. He supervises the PhD research behind Beyond the Algorithm.
Alexander Verbraeck is a full professor at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). His research focuses on modelling and simulation, with applications in logistics and transportation, safety, and security, including simulation and serious games as research methods. He also holds a position as visiting professor at the R.H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland. He is also a researcher and developer at TU Delft's Gamelab. He supervises the PhD research behind Beyond the Algorithm.
Nihit Goyal is an assistant professor of public policy at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). He studies the politics of policy innovation, combining qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods to examine how governments address complex societal challenges, such as the digital transformation or the energy transition, and evaluate the effectiveness, equity, and legitimacy of their policies. He supervises the PhD research behind Beyond the Algorithm.
Beyond the Algorithm is built on research carried out with Dutch inspectorates. The organisations that took part cannot be named, because they took part on the understanding that they would stay anonymous — but the game exists because their staff gave their time and spoke openly about how the work is really done.
